I apologize in advance for this here seemingly small question. I'll admit that it's a little off topic but I'll justify it because most of us have run out of gas a time or two.

Background: What you always want to have with you on a trip is a good gas can. Plastic or whatever. Full, partly full, or whatever.

They have become expensive to buy a new one. About 15-20 bucks. And then, some are smaller than 5 gallons.

I have several cans from 1 gallon on up to five. I can find more at the flea
markets around here.

Now for the delimma:

I can't seem to keep the little air cap. They just seem to plain old disappear. Seems that if I loan a can to a neighbor or family, the first thing they do is unscrew the cap and toss it in the weeds.

b. The ones you see for sell at the flea markets always have it missing. too.

So here's the question: Does anyone know of a national chain that carries the replacement cap? Like maybe on one of those help trees in a auto parts store or something?

I know that a lot of the later models of gas cans, have a vent in the spout but that's not what i need.

Thanks,
Charlie computer

I will never, ever, EVER use a plastic gas can for fuel again. In the '90s I was preparing to work on my '70 HD FLP. Part of the preparation was to drain & remove the gas tanks. I drained about 3 gal of fuel into a brand new Blitz plastic gas can. When I tried to screw the cap back on the bottom three inches of the can broke apart and dumped all of the gas on my feet and the floor. It was cool that morning but I didn't light the stove in my small shop because I would be draining the tank. Had I not taken that precaution I wouldn't be here today.

Good thing you didn't have the stove going!!! Not only you, but that FLP would be a great loss also.

Plastic cans are junk as stated. Reading some years ago, it was stated that carrying a 5 gal can of gas in trunk is akin to about a case of dynamite in a rear ender. Not good to carry any gas in trunk of car.

Jim.

I have the jerry cans for storage in the barn or garage not a car, I use to keep them at the rear of my jeep. Dumb move if hit in the rear its like 10 sticks of dynamite. Now plastic usually won't explode if it catches fire it will melt and you have a big fire, but no boom. I know this because I had one catch fire and it melted. Bottom line your damned if you do and damned if you don't a good gas gauge is worth the money.

The cap I need is the vent cap for a plastic can. The can is for my 2 cycle "weed-eater."

Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Not only accurate gas guage but look at it before you go past the last station for many miles. I have seen many vehicles out of fuel less than 3 miles PAST a gas station.

My first trip with the local club, just approaching a service station when the car bucked once and died. Coasted into the station and filled up, took almost 16 gallons. Gas guage said I had about 1/4 tank left. I opt for carrying an empty gas can but not one with fuel in it. Since we always travel with others then I have a ride to the nearest source of fuel.

Ok Charlie

take it looking at the picture I posted you are looking for the little black caps on the RIGHT side of the cans above ?? for the Vent.

If so here are a few options I found that MAY work for you...

4 Gott Rubbermaid NEW VENT SCREW CAP Replacements
Screw Vent Cap Stopper
Screw Vent Cap 84003 Briggs Stratton

Hopefully will help you, if not keep trying . . .
