I'm having some problems with my 26 which has 28 motor. I have quite a loud knock or click. I've checked all over with my stethescope and everything sounds normal everywhere except when I touch the #1 exhaust rocker where I hear it very loudly and distinctly. Last fall before I put it away for winter I had the oil pan off and I changed out #2 con rod which looked bad on the big end with babbit flaking off. I checked all the other bearing clearances with plastigauge and tightened up some. I noticed the noise this spring and it's now even more pronounced since I just put on a new muffler. I've just had the pan off again and nothing seems out of order. I've checked the valves and they are all set to specs. Compression is only 50 on 1 and 2. 3 has 65 and 4 I didn't check. Oil pressure is pretty much 0 at idle but goes up to 4 or 5 at revs. Anyone have any ideas?

Well nobody else has any idea so here's a few thoughts. I have a 28 and know it quite well. You seem to be happy with the bottom end and find noise towards the top. (1) The rocker gear can work loose/strip so that it rises and falls onto the head. (2)Faulty pushrod/cam follower. (3). I once had the lands between the piston rings break away on one cylinder. It still ran well but it clicked a lot.

It sounds like, from here, that you have a tired exhaust valve spring.
Happiness is the trip, not the destination.
