Do the serial numbers on the Chevy fours indicate the year of the motor? I believe my motor to be a 1927 but it would be nice to know. The serial number, which is stamped on an embossed area on the right side of the block, is 3834481. There are other casting numbers cast into the block above the distributor in the center of the block. Most other makes of cars can be identified as to the year by the serial number, but on this forum, most people seem to be going by the casting numbers.

I cant help with the numbers but the 27 Chevy has the single exhaust and came in 2 types, the early 27 had 1 inch valves and the 27 1/2 had 1 1/2 in valves.

AHa; Look above the distributor and post the casting numbers . One casting number from 1927 is 346709. There may be others. Steve

Ok That answers that question. It is a 1927 motor, but this opens a whole nother can of worms. I also have a model H. This car was identified as a 1916 by the serial number some years back, but it has a 1914 transmission in it. Can we use the same trick on the model H to confirm the year?

AHa; Sorry, can't help you there. I've got a 1915-16 "Price List of Parts" book, but no casting numbers. Steve

Hi, If you would post ALL numbers from your Model "H", and perhaps a picture, we would take another look at the facts.

The casting number is L1115, found in the middle, top of the block, right side. There is a number stamped into the front cross arm of the motor, 24324. It has the same transmission as Bruce Wright's 1914. Although I'm sure you would like to see pictures, I street rodded the car. It has an earlier style roadster body and a model FB cloverleaf head on the motor.

L1115 = Dec-11-15 Don't know anything about "street rods".

Thanks Ray This would mean the car is a 1915, correct? A motor produced that early in the year would be sold as a 15?
I use the word street rod loosely. The chassis is stock except for the head.

I'm sorry, my thinking is screwy. A Dec 1915 motor indicates a 1916 car. I've got it now.
