I tried to remove the lifter on a 1929 194 engine with the push rods removed I can only lift the lifter about 1/4 in. I was afraid to use tools on them I just lifted them with my fingers. Can they be taped out from the bottom or is the cam in the way.

The is probably some varnish around the side of the lifter in the area that extends below the block, Working it up and down and squirting a solvent around the lifter will help.

Thank You Gene. I did not think about varnish buildup.

Just grab the edge of the lifter with vice grips, DON'T CLAMP TIGHT ENOUGH TO CRACK IT, just enough pressure to keep a hold of it. I squirt lacquer thinner around the edge while gently pumping it up and down. At each upward motion you will scrape a bit of varnish off and the next stroke will let a bit more thinner to the varnish. Be patient, just keep pumping and it will finally pop out. Don't flood the area with LT, just a bit to keep it wet while pumping.
