Hey everyone I have a 1941 chevy sedan with a 216 and a 4.11 rear end. Lately I've been looking to get it to go faster so I can drive on the highway but it hasn't been working. I was wondering if it would be easier to get a different rear end or if there if somewhere I can get different gears for mine?

How much faster do you want it to go? A '41 with a good engine will cruise at 60 MPH. Installing a 3.73 gear set will give you a 10% speed increase compared to engine speed.
Then you could go 66 MPH.
With your 4.11 60 MPH is about 3100 RPM and with the 3.73 66 MPH would be 3100 RPM.....or 3.55 gears from a Power Glide would give you another 3 1/2 % engine speed reduction....3100 RPM about 69 MPH.
If you get the torque tube and differential center secton from a 1953 0r 1954 stick you will have a 3.70. From a 1950-1954 PG a 3.55.

Thanks for the information. Would the torque tube and differential from those years fit with my rear end?

The Filling Station is selling 3.55 rear differential gear sets at the moment. Depending on your budget, suitable for 1940 year onwards.
Part number FS-789

All - note models mentioned.
You keep yor banjo housing (wheel to wheel) and used the center section and torque tube from the models mentioned.

I bought a complete used rear end from a 1954 Chevy with a 3:55 ring gear and pinion. With the expert help from Gene Schneider (Chev Nut) I installed the total inside gears in my '41. Made a lot of difference in performance. Gene can walk you through this project. JIM

Hi Gene,

How can you tell one year's gear ratio from another's? What would be the ratio for a 47-54 Chevy/GMC pickup truck axle?

Thanks, Mike

Without removing the cover the code number stamped on the housing will give you the info. See front of shop manual for locaton. Give me what you find and I can decode it for you.
Ratio for PU truck rear axle....if a 1/2 ton truck it would be 4.11 up through 1953 and 3.9 after that.
