Hello everyone,

I joined these forums for some assistance to identifying an engine in a 1969 Chevelle Yenko Replica (I wish it was kept as the original SS396 as "it came").

All information I present is assumed or based on the little knowledge I have, so please feel free to correct me as needed.

The engine cast date is:
"I 18 7"
My presumption from light research is that the cast date was Sept 18th, 1967.

The engine stamp is:
"CE852557"
However, I can not tell if this was re-stamped based on the clarity of certain characters and double stamps of others (primarily because I thought they had group stamps in 1968)

The rear cast number (appears to be):
"3916321"
Which based (again) on light research would be a 1968 427.

I suppose my biggest question is that there are differences between the cast date, engine cast number, and the stamp. How do I go about decoding the block further to figure out more? No VIN stamps could be located on the block, either on the stamp pad or near the oil filter rough cast area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Doug

What you have is a warranty block possibly 1968. The internals would be unknown without original paper work....Joe

Thank you for your reply. Any knowledge on the difference between the cast date and the block casting? Seems that September of 1967 would be quite early for a 1968 427.

Would pictures of the block numbers assist in identification?

Doug, I am not 100% positive but I don't think they used the letter "I" because of the obviouse confusion with the number 1. I remember hearing this from a very good source

To be honest, I don't know. But I found that information on this site: Chevelle Block Casting Information

Pictures are here:

Hopefully I made the settings correct so that everyone can look at the photos. If not, please let me know so I can correct it.
