Anyone know what color is correct for the G&G Vacuum tank. The tank was used mostly on the 1923/24 Superior.

Ray,
I have a really good condition GG tank that has never been repainted etc. I do not know if it came off a Chev but I did see a whole collection of NOS a few years ago at the Bendigo Swap and they all looked the same as mine.
On mine I can assure you the paint is indeed a thin coating only, so thin that it almost appears as it has been plated not painted. In the oxidised form it appears as a pale grey with a khaki hue. Polishing tends to take the paint straight off, but the colour definitely assumes a grey olive tone.Scraping the paint with a knife creates a powder which has an even stronger olive colour. Definitely a military like colour. A grey version of the WWII Willys Jeep would be close.
Hope this is at least a starting point for you.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are saying it is basically the light grey that Bill H sells as the engine color for the 4-cylinders?

Anyone else?

The Hirsh 4 cyl paint is not light gray. It is more of a green-gray.

Not really. The 4 cyl green gray sounds to me like it may be a good match for the gray-olive color described. I just didn't think the "light gray" description was accurate for what you were referring to.

Hi Ray,
Joe Here...
I have two of the G&G tanks. Both appear to have an almost dull galvanized look to them

When I was glass beading my tank I went through RED, BLACK, and then bare surface, which was about as you described. I have some galvanized paint and may just shoot a thin coat on it.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I think mine are all lightly plated probably with zinc (galvanize).

Had 2 of these GG vacuum tanks that came off 2 early Oldsmobiles and they weren't painted, they both had a tinned looking coating over the bare steel housing.

I have 6 GG tanks and 5 of them seem to be galvanized. The other has a thin coat of black paint.

Ray,
I have the original tank on my 23. It appears to be galvanized and the top is unpainted brass. Can send you photos if you would like.

Thanks for the offer. I have now cleaned more than one of the tanks and am convinced they were natural (galvanized?).
