In the repair manual for removing the engine it said to remove the shift lever. If I can not get it to unlock then my next move is to remove the top of the transmission. Is that going to be a problem on getting thing to line up when I put it back together. I plan on making a cover to keep dirt out.

Take the four bolts holding the transmission top out, lift up, put a cardboard, plastic bag or ? and tape it on. Support torque tube. Take out engine and trans as an assembly. Put back in as assembly and fit rear of trans into torque tube. May have to rotate a rear tire a bit to get splines to align. Anything extending above the top of transmission housing (like e-brake lever) will interfere with firewall. Removal is not to difficult. I have done it too many times.

Thank you Chipper I was sure about the transmission internals. It has been a long time since I have worked on a Chevrolet manual transmission. Last one was in 1958 and it was a 1950 Chevrolet.
