I have a seized wheel brake cylinder on my 37 Chev. I have taken it apart but it is too pitted to hone and save. Does anybody happen to have a Delco or NAPA (or other) number for wheel cylinders and a master cylinder so that I can source it locally. I may as well change them all if one is bad!! Thanks

I replaced the rear ones on a '37 recently: NAPA #UP3396

Fronts didn't need replacement, so I don't have that number available, but you can find it easy enough on the NAPA website.

Found the numbers on the NAPA site. They list the part numbers for a 37 . How about that !! Napa up 3730 -rf, up 3731 -lf and the rear up 3396 as Bow tie already posted.

I agree, if 1 cylinder is no good the others probably arent far behind. Wise idea to do the lot and flush the brake fluid as well.

Joe,

If I may jump in here as I will be starting the brake system in the next few weeks.

What is sleeving? Who does it and how much does it cost?

Thanks in advance for continuing my education.

A machine shop will mill out enough of the inside to remove the corrosion and insert a hollow sleeve with the correct ID. As cheap as new cylinders are through NAPA it's not worth the cost IMHO. If you are wanting to keep all of the parts the cars was born with on the car it would probably be worth the extra cost to have it sleeved. When replacement parts aren't available, sleeving is sometimes the only option.

Thanks Tiny!

I hear two reasons for sleeves;

  • Desire to keep original cylinders
  • Replacements aren't available

Any other reasons for a sleeve over a replacement?

Once you sleeve all 5 parts and install new kits you will be set for many years. New cylinders could start rust and corrosion immediately.

If you expect to keep the car and drive it, it is not a difficult question to answer.

Is there any advantage to using a silicone brake fluid as compared to normal fluid. I was wondering if it would draw less moisture with the silicone .

The wheel cylinders used in the Chevrolet Huck style brakes (1936-1950) do not have rubber boots sealing the ends and rust in these areas. The silicone fluid helps in this area.

I changed my '37 coupe over to DOT5 Silicone brake fluid in 1993 and just redid my brake system last year because I wanted to switch over to a dual master cylinder. I replaced the rear brake cylinders and ran a hone through the fronts and installed new innards. I also installed new shoes all the way around and turned the drums.

I expect at my age, that'll be the last brake job I'll need to do on it...........

I have been using it in my 60 Impala since 1992, never a problem! HOWEVER make sure everything is either new or flushed with alcohol, hoses, line, everything! Only time I ever heard of trouble is when the system is dirty, old componants used, mixed fluids (dot 3 and dot 5) also problem have been known to happen with in line brake switches. It is all I will use

With the help of your computer you can find a shop near you that does sleeving as their primary business...You may have to mail them to the shop, and the cost is reasonable...They have the fixtures and material to get the job done...They'll clean and paint your parts...You'll like them...Get some sleep...lol

I bought new ones for front hucks. I had the thread fail on the adjuster when I applied alot of force. I had to replace them with the old adjusters.
