Is it possible to have a Flint-assembled engine in a Tonowanda-built 1964 Chevy SS? My "Chevies by the Numbers" book says Tonowanda built cars only with Tonowanda produced parts…but there ARE some mistakes in the book…thx. Billu38

Tonawanda was (maybe still is) an engine plant

The data I have does not list a Chevrolet assembly plant in Tonowanda, NY. In the 20's, 30's and through the 1941 model year, Buffalo, NY was listed as was Terrytown, NY. In 1942 the Buffalo assembly plant did not assemble any vehicles and it isn't on the list of assembly plants after WW II. In 1964 only Terrytown, NY is listed for the state of New York.

My thoughts are there were a dozen different engines for pasasenger cars and some certain engines were probably only made at Flint and shipped all over the country. Of the dozen engines you can brake them down to applications. ie type of transmission, AC or not,car line, and on and on.
What engine is in your 1964?

Bill, Tonawanda didn't build cars; they built engines. IF you have a "T" in the middle of your VIN, that's the Tarrytown, NY plant (Chevys first plant).
Full size passenger cars through '64 could have had engines from either Flint OR Tonawanda. Only the Corvettes were specific to ONLY Flint motors.
