It was an unpainted steel looking something like galvanizing. What color is yours?

Interesting discussion. Don't remember the finish on the last 40's car I restored. Today I received a gas tank for a 1928 which I assumed was a metal finish. This tank was obviously the original 1928 tank, and there is no doubt the tank was painted with a light coat of BLACK paint. Where the straps went around the tank was obviously painted with BLACK paint.

The 1934 and older tanks were regualr steel and painted black. The 1935 and up cars has tern steel tanks and were natural.

Mine is black but I painted it that color. Any idea if a guy can get a natural color paint somewhere? Would Silver suffice?

If it were mine I would paint it with a silver paint and not too bright of a silver.

black - The filler tube would be silver if built onto the tank but black when connected by a hose.

I painted it today a Silver Color from Eastwood. Came out pretty good. Just not sure if the tube coming off the tank should be black or Silver? The filler tube I will leave black and I think the tube off the tank should be black also. What is your suggestion? Thanks again.

My '47 tank appears to have been unpainted until perhaps the dealer added an undercoating (black of course) to the tank, frame, fenders and anything else that's under there...After I removed the tank I couldn't help but notice the top was not painted...I think I recall the strap's were painted...

I have been looking all week for the filler hose and clamps to buy. Nobody seems to have them. Anyone have a suggestion whom to try as I have tried Chevs of 40's and filling Station with no luck.

Johnny, Are you sure about the color of the straps and the square holder pieces? I was thinking they were natural as the tank. Looks good now but seems that it would draw the eye when mounted. A silver tank with two black streaks running across it. Uhm? Very nice job of cleaning up everything and nice picturees, as well. Charlie

I also said the filler neck was black - so the exposed part below the cap would not look unfinished. A new filler neck from parts stock was unpainted.

It' kinda in a rough spot...the metal inlet tube and all...For a while I used a tube designed for drag use...Still didn't hold up...Believe I purchased the correct parts from Filling Station...Price was good...As I recall they don't have that over flow/anti-theft tube...available...An eBay item if you can find it...That's why I spray mine with under coat...even if though, I believe it's galvanized...
Johnny's pic shows a cork float...I got rid of that...Also added a "ground" wire between the tank and frame...From one the screws on the tank sending unit...
