I need to install a wiper that works better than the vacuum setup.
I know that there must be someone out there that has installed the perfect system.
I understand that if an aftermarket motor is installed inside, that the windshield will not open all the way.
Then there is the wiper kit for the model A that mounts outside.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dale

Dale --

Probably can't help you here, but I have a single speed electric wiper on my 31. It was there when I got the car. It works ok, but the goofy wiper arm is made out of what looks like a piece of wire with a tension spring at motor end. Flops all over the place at anything over about 25-30 mph. Kinda useless. If I had my druthers, would prefer the vacuum unit any day. The motor is mounted outside in original position of the vacuum unit.

Thanks Jim.
The vacuum setup that I have uses an arm that sounds like yours.
Snyders sells one for the old fords that goes on the outside of the header.

I bought a rebuilt proper '31 wiper motor and arm/blade and have it hooked up as factory did. Works perfectly, not that I'm out much in wet weather. My sugestion is keep it original, and use well maintained parts.

There was an internal type wiperv motor of some sort on my car when I bought it, and to do that, someone had ripped out all the windshield riser hardware. Cost me a lot of time and money to get this stuff all back in proper working order. Keep 'em original if you can!

Thank you for the reply.
It has been my experience in the past with the vacuum wipers that they do in fact work as designed when properly rebuilt and maintained. They work great at very low engine RPM when the engine is making good vacuum. Unfortunately they do not work well at the upper end of the throttle when the engine makes little or no vacuum.
My car is very close to stock and I would like to keep it that way, but there is a problem. It is a daily driver. Here in this part of Alaska, we cannot go anywhere without driving through the mountains or hills. The wipers need to be dependable, and actually work under all conditions, yes, even slushy snow on the windshield.
All that being said, Even with my 51 Panhead, Any modifications that I have done to it can be undone by replacing the new parts with the old ones that I save in a box.
Even back when the cars were newer, people modified them with heaters, lights etc...
Back to the wiper. Just looking for ideas and finding out what others have done.
Respectfully,
Dale
