The 36 I am working on for the Texas Transportation Museum, in San Antonio, was changed to a 12 volt system years ago.
The museum wants to go back to the original 6 volt system. Thus I would need to replace the installed alternator with the correct generator, voltage regulator, and brackets.
Does anybody out there know where I can get this stuff so I can inform the museum?
Thanks for the help.

The wanted or for sale section way down the page on this site. Put a wanted ad in with your email address.

Also read hemmings motor news out of Vermont, 500--700 pages per month of for sale and wanted.

go to ebay usa , type in 1932 Chevrolet using the ADVANCED SEARCH and see whats for sale. You can get specific as to generator or whatever you need.

A 1936 does not have a voltage regulator. It has a 3 brush generator and a cut out which is mounted on top of the generator.

Try eBay. Also, you will need to know the generator model number that was used in 1936 so that you can purchase the correct one and you will also need a wiring diagram as well.

You can purchase an aftermarket replacement cut-out (a cut-out was used instead of a voltage regulator in 1936) from the Filling Station for $99.50.

Tu,

If you join 1936ChevyOwners@yahoogroups.com you'll find a lot of guys making street rods out of 1936 Chevys. Those street rod builders are an excellent source of parts because to them the original parts are just scrap iron that is in their way.

A fried generator cutout makes an excellent core for reuse by installing a diode and you can probably get 20 of them for the cost of a repop from China. Those cutouts were used on a wide variety of vehicles, GM and non-GM, and all they are is a mechanical contact point set that is pulled closed by a magnet when the generator revs up enough to make about 7 volts. Simple!

Tu,

Here's your generator cutout for $14 new:

It's probably made in China but the one for $99.50 probably is too. What is an electromagnet in a tin box worth?

You're looking for generator 946C.

Contact Jason at AER: Electrical goodies

He does good work and sells some parts, I got a NOS delco cut out from him last year as well as the parts to rebuild my 946C genny. He'll rebuild 'em too.
