How can you tell the difference between a 206 fuel pump and a 216 fuel pump. Most do not have casting numbers and they look alike? Will a 216 pump work on a 206? Thanks

A 216 fuel pump will not fit a 1936. The 1935 and 1936 pumps have the glass bowl on the inlet side of the pump. The 216 has the inverted bowl on top of the pump.

I have a 35 and a 36 engine and both have a 216 looking pump with bowl on top. So are these 216 pumps?

They may be some kind of aftermarket pump. Is there an AC cast in any of the bodies?

I'll check for numbers today. So would a 216 pump work on a 36 engine. Plumbing is different but bolt up is the same. Is Output pressure different?

Dick, I have never heard of a 216 fuel pump being installed on a 1936 engine. They use different mounting gaskets and the kit is different. The actuating arm is also different. Just the arm being different leads me to elive it will not work (correctly). I don't have an early pump around to compare at this time.

The only # I found on one pump is 109 and 429 stamped in the mounting flange, I'm assuming these are after market pumps. I'll do some more comparing as soon as I can find a correct 36 pump. Thanks

Dick,
The 429 pump is a '37 and later pump. The mounting pad is a different shape but I believe the bolt spacing is the same. My '36 truck had one of those pumps on when I got it. It did not work so I replaced it with the proper (421) pump. The 429 pumps will apparently work to some degree on an earlier engine.
If you have problems finding a correct pump, let me know. They are on ebay regularly but as you probably already know, an old stock rebuilt pump may not stand up to modern fuel with alcohol.
Good luck.

Mike

429 was the AC short or type number for pumps fitting 37-51.

Well it looks like my 36 is running with a 216 pump. Seems to work OK. Hard to start after it has sat for a couple of weeks but don't know if that is a pump problem or just the lousy gas we get nowadays. Thanks for the help.

Dick,

There's a Ford fuel pump diaphragm that's a direct fit in the '34-'36 Chevy fuel pump for $7.50 from Sacramento (CA) Vintage Ford. All you have to do to use it is relocate the 6 peripheral holes with a hole punch. It comes with the link installed unlike the cheesy pieces of rubber minus the link commonly sold elsewhere.

The 1935 and 1936 had the glass bowl, 1934 did not.

What application(year/model) is that diaphragm used for? I bought the one for my '36 Chevrolet and as you say had to do a bit of work to add the link.

Don't use gasoline with ethanol in an original unit until the diaphragm has been upgraded.
