Hello all. I'm looking for some help in putting my "blue flame" back together for my '55. I got the engine back from machining and had a straight oil pan "in stock" to replace the dented one that came off. Then I noticed that the baffles are different between the 2 pans. I don't think that the one that came off is original to the engine, so I wonder whether either is right for the '55. I have the '55 oil pump with the floating pick-up, but have not installed it yet.

Please check the photo. The one on the left has a horizontal baffle, the one on the right has a vertical baffle. Please let me know where you think these pans came from - year, car vs. truck, ???, and which (if either) is correct for my '55.

Thanks,

Joe

The 1957 parts boook lists the oil pan as having a verticle baffle for the the 1955-1957 6 cyl engine.
The 1955 had the floating screen. The 1956 changed to the fixed screen due to the floating screen loosing prime when the oil was changed.
The fixed screen replaced the floating screen when the problem arose.

OK, thanks. Unfortunately the correct one is the dented one. I'd be interested to hear from anybody with a nice one that they want to part with.

Also good to know about the pick up screen. I have a fixed screen, so I think I'll use that & avoid the priming problems.

Have you tried banging out the dent? Some careful sheet metal working might fix the original pan.

Cheers, Dean

Yeah, I think you're right. It would be good practice too. That's probably what I'll do, unless a nice one falls in my lap.

Not sure if the pan with the horizontal baffle will work with the goose neck 1956 oil pick-up.
