1936 Standard - I have a new clutch fork and ball stud and I'm trying to get the ball stud installed in the fork. My old ball stud has a retainer similar to a snap ring, the new stud does not have this retainer, so I want to remove the old retainer and use it. However, I cannot get the old retainer out. I did find a spring clip with the new ball stud and I thought it might be a replacement for the ring, but I couldn't get it in and finally broke it. It looks like part FS-212 from the Filling Station.

This is the old fork and ball stud and the retainer I can't get out. I've tried various sized screwdrivers to pry it out. What's the trick to remove it.

Here's a picture from dfd37chev from an earlier post showing the retainer. It's the one on the bottom.

I thought maybe this spring clip replaced the retainer but couldn't get it in and broke it. What is this clip for?

That little clip is the retainer for the ball. I have a complete Wohlert replacement unit and it shows that part on the box.

This is something I need to do to my '36 but you beat me to it!

Looking at it tonight I would say the clip goes below the ball and then the whole unit is inserted into the socket. Maybe feed the bottom of the clip into the socket groove first, then squeeze the open ends together while pushing it into place.

As for getting the "old style" out... maybe a pair of needle nose pliers pulling on one end of the spring clip? That or drill two small holes and use some circle clip pliers... might make removal and install easier or it may just ruin the clip!

Thanks, Jason. I may have to order a new spring clip and try to install it again if I can't get the old retainer out. I'm beginning to think it's not made to come out. I'm about ready to saw the fork in two.
