My Chevy has been having issues with the starter engaging over the last month. Finally it got so bad that it wouldn't turn the engine at all.
With the starter on the car, You can hear the starter spin, and the solenoid engage, but it doesn't mesh with the ring gear.
I assumed the solenoid was going out, so I grabbed one out of my stockpile. Changed it out and the same thing happens. Thought maybe I had found another worn out one. Changed it again, and the same thing happens.
Took the starter off, and bench tested it, and it works like it should.
The Drive isn't mangled up, nor is the ring gear.
Now, I don't know if it is possible to even shim one of these as they bolt up horizontally instead of Vertically.
Any thoughts?

I would remove the inspection cover and check for missing teeth on the ring gear.

Pulled the Flywheel/Clutch Cover, and every single tooth is there, and in good shape. I am stumped.

Remove the starter and perform a "lock-up" test.

I should probably know what that is, but I don't... Does it involve putting a pin in the hole?

I think the "lock up test" mentioned is lock the starter gear and activate the solenoid BRIEFLY. The starter pinion should not rotate even if the armature does. Tests the 1 way clutch in the drive gear. I the armature turns and the gear dont replace the bendix clutch. Tony

Thanks for the response guys, I will check it out tomorrow after work. But in the meantime, does anybody know if a 216 Stop Starter will work on a 1955 235 with the 235 ring gear? If I can't get this straightened out, I thought about putting the stomp starter back on, if it would work...

II didn't fully understand your question but - a 6 volt starter will only work on a 6 volt engine flywheel and a 12 V starter requires a 12 V engine flywheel.
