Hi everyone, I"m new here. I just bought a '40 w/36k original miles. It started off shifting fine but now...1-2 weeks later and 50 miles later, while shifting...it always grinds...no silent shifting anymore :-( what the heck? is there an adjustment for the throwout bearing or something similar that could be the culprit? I've ordered a 1940 service manual but its not here yet. The car has been driven only 2k miles or less since 1972, but the previous owner was quite a 'car guy' and had many cars/paraphanlia etc ( thats how I bought it...at an estate sale). I understand that he was really sick for several months before his death ( last august) so besides it being moved around the lot, I dont' think it was driven much.

How far do you have to depress the clutch pedal for full release, IF you're getting full release? If the clutch isn't fully dis-engaging it'll grind.

Hi,
I'd really love to hear the answer to this one in case it's similar to my issue. I just inherited my Dad's '39 Chev, and I remember when I drove it years ago it shifted so smooth in all gears. For the past several years however it almost always grinds a bit going in to each gear. He had a few classics that he was driving more than this one so he never bothered with it, but I'd like to finally get it fixed. I'll add that not only does it grind, but it now seems to slip out of reverse and on occasion 2nd as well. I think it has something to do with the vacuum shift but that's just a guess.

Check the vacuum hose that comes from the intake manifold and goes to the vacuum can down by the transmission. It sounds like it may have split the hose.

thanks everyone, I do press the clutch completely in ...... drove again last night.....was better if I shifted very slow/smooth....except for 3rd gear....slight grind regardless. I will get under it tonight and check what some of you suggested. Oh, it doesn't do it going into reverse....and 1st gear is hard to find...unless I put it into reverse first, then down to 1st gear. Is that indicative of anything wrong or consistent with what some of you offered as a possible explanation?

"Except into 3rd gear slight grind".
More or less common after awhile on a car with the vacuum shift. Caused by either or both the the 2nd gear energizing spring or the syncronizer drum/rings.
The vacuum assist forces the gear change faster than a manual (at the gears) and is rough on the syncronizer parts.
Test - double clutch for that shift. When you double cluch you release the clutch quickly between the 2nd to 3rd shift. This gets all gears going the same speed.
