The 1951 DID NOT have the serial number stamped on the frame or any other place except the tag on the left front door post.

There has always been some notion that the serial number was on the frame somewhere. Back at the Indianapolis meet in the seventies, Bob Wingate gave a seminar to the 41 owners. He seemed very informed. He said that the serial number was on the rear wheel hump, upper side of the frame. I have never searched one to see. (BigRichie can vouch for that as well. He was sitting right next to me during the seminar.) Question: Coming down the assembly line wasn't the chassis/car identified before the little plate was attached to the floor or door post. Was there a tag or something? How did they know that that particular serial number was the right one for that car? Seems to me that, somehow, the car would have been serial number identified as the chassis was being assembled. I don't know. Charlie

The 1955 -57 have the serial number stamped into the top of the frame under what would be where the drivers feet would be when the body is on the frame.

I think so. He had a black 41 Chevrolet Cabriolet he was taking bids on at the meet. Real neat and straight car. I think it went for about thrity six hundred (not grand but hundred). Real personable guy. Charlie

That would be about the right price. Today old car prices are generally 10-15 times what they were in 1971. So is gasoline, bread, milk and many of the other things we buy.
First frame numbers I can remember for Chevrolets was 1955. Ford was much earlier. Guess that is what people are thinking when they think that Chevys have frame numbers on earlier years. And as we all have learned DMV folks don't have a clue!

My 53 Chevy convertible has the serial number stamped on the top of the frame, @ the lower rear corner of the drivers door.

A follow up to my post regarding the frame stamped serial number on my 1953 convertible from a guy that worked for GM back in the days- "all convertible bodies were made in Lansing then shipped to the various assembly plants. The serial number on the frame would assure the body/frame were "correct for each other".

If the 'guy", from back in the day, is speaking of 1953 and up convertibles, his message makes sense. I have not seen or heard of any serial number stamping on convertibles, prior to 1953.
