Soft steel. Not sure if they were up to Grade 2 standards. Stronger nuts would be better. I have used self locking nuts and big block Chevy or Ford rod bolts without any problems. Be sure to set up everything with non-locking nuts. Once rod gaps are set then install the locking nuts and tighten.

I was looking at Grade 2 nuts from Fastenal. I was not sure if a Grade 2 would be good enough. Now I will think about self locking nuts and flat washer. Would you use the fiber type or one that is oval shape.

Use the big block Chevy rod bolts as Chipper says. I used the same and have 1000 miles on a new engine and no worries. If they will say together in a big block it will hold in your 6

Go to any auto parts store and ask for 12 ea. 3/8-24 rod nuts for a big block Chevy, they are self locking.
