I have used the standard 10-30 oil for years in my old chevys . Some are buying 10-40 Rotella and using that in the old engines. They claim it has the additives the engines need that the newer oil doesn't ! What do you think ? Thanks. "I know the answer if I could just think of it ! "

If you have had good luck with what you have been using then I would stick with it. As the saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The additive you are refering to is Zinc or ZDDP.
There is more than enough Zinc in 10W-30 to satisfy the needs in a standard 6 Cyl. engine. In fact much more than what was in oils 50 years ago. The engines that would require more are higher performance V-8 with stronger valve springs due to the use of high-lift camshafts. Also if a new cam was installed in any rebuilt engine. A lot of the new cams are not hardened properly and need all the help they can get.
In that case you can buy QuakerState Defy in 10W-30 as it has extra Zinc and Walmart has it for a reasonable price.
Along with Zinc good oils also have sulfur and Moly added which help to serve the same purpose.
Rotella and other oils designed for Diesel use have had their Zinc content reduced due to Diesels having a converter in the later years. The Sulfur in diesel oils also has been reduced for the same reason sufur has been removed from diesel fuels.

No problem. Just change the oil every Fall or every 1500 miles.
