I want to put a new gearshift knob on my '41 Coupe. I seem to remember that you put it in boiling water and that it is to be placed at a specific angle. (I can't find a previous post on this issue.) Am I on the right track? Thanks,

Dan.

Yes, heat it up in hot water but not boiling. One edge of the knob is slightly thinner than the other. The thin edge goes towards the steering wheel.

If you don't have the vacuum shift, then it can go in any direction you want. The flat direction is for those with the vacuum shift assist mechanism in place and working.

Gene refers to the finger tips being use with little contact. Like a lady would or gentleman would. Not your whole fist wrapped around it so you can get it in gear like a less technologically advanced car without the vacuum assistance.
