Recently there was a discussion about SeaFoam and Marvel Mystery Oil. I have used MMO in the past and never had any experiance with SF. At the same time my grand son inlaw, who repairs small engines talked about how wonderful SF was for cleaning up gummy fuel systems in engines that had last years gas and,or Stabil added. After hearing about SF and all the good things it can do I decited I had to know more about the product. Upon do a search of SF I read many more positve reviews of the product. Then I found what the the contents were. SeaFoam is about (by weight) 50% pale oil. This is a clear refined light oil something like benzene. Around 35% naptha (white gas -used to be used for cleaning clothes) and 20% Isopropyl alcohol.
SeaFoam can be added to gas or oil. Many of the ingrediants will boil off as soon as the oil reaches full temperature. What it does in the fuel system (adding more alcohol) is doubtful.
But they say it works. Some mentioned they made their own by mixing the above products.
MMO consists of benzene, mineral sprits, and napthenic? hydrocarbons. All solvents.
I found this all quite interesting.

According to Wikipedia

"The product [MMO] is composed of 74 percent mineral oil, 25 percent stoddard solvent, and 1 percent lard.[1]" ([1] is an FAA reference)

o-Dichlorobenzene (1,2-Dichlorobenzene (ortho-dichlorobenzene))0 - 5% , Fine White Mineral Oil 70 - 100% , Mineral Spirits 20 - 30% [2] (couldn't find the [2] reference)

In either case it is 95+% light mineral oil and hydrocarbon solvent.

I used the required hazardous material listing that is required by law.
There may be two formulas as it may have changed when the MMO name was bought out by the present company.

There are some benefits from MMO and ATF. Both are easily obtained light weight oils. They can both provide intake valve lubrication when added to gasoline. Also help free stuck engines and other parts. Most of us use one or the other relatively often.

They are solvent based so could disolve sludge, loosen carbon. thin out oil, and act as an upper cylinder lubricant. Both say they are a fuel stabilizer. Now that ATF has gone up in price it may be cheaper to buy MMO when it's on sale....and it smells the best.

As I stated on another post about Seafoam it works for me. I have used Seafoam in the last fuel of the season the last two years in my '41. This year, and last year, it started very easy in the spring and it starts on the first touch of the started every time I drive it. If Chevgene uses it you can be sure it will not damage your engine. Thanks again Gene for all the help on restoring my '41 Coupe. JIM

I am an MMO fan. I have used it since 1951 and in fact had an MMO injector on the car for quite a while. I have a friend who swears by Sea Foam, and uses it is several of his old vehicles. What works for you works for you and not necessarily the other guy. As to "is it worth the money? I don't know. talk

I would like to know what is a MMO injector. Is that something you made to inject MMO into the carb while the engine is running. It sound interesting.

I remember that some guys used to swear by Bardahl Top Oil. Guess they stopped making that quite a while ago.

The injector was a group of components set up to automatically inject a measured amount of MMO into the carburetor. It could also inject other types of snake oil.

The MMO injector was basically a jar mounted on the firewall connected by a line going to a spacer under the carburetor. It could be regulated so a small amount of MMO would be injected into the incoming fuel/air mixture. Used to be sold and pictured in magazines like Popular Mechanices, etc.

There is a product called "Flash Lube" sold here and is targeted at those that use LPG fuel (you lot call it BBQ fuel) but I consider it a waste of money as an injection system but may have other uses.

It was a bottle holding about 1 can of MMO, mounted on the manifold and had a vacumn line connection to the manifold there was a small adjustment needle valve in line. I took it off when I went to dual exhaust and intake. Probably worth a small fortune now. talk

I would put the MMO injector just below the water injectors on the useless automotive add-ons. Not sure what would be on the top of the list that includes spark intensifiers, tp filters, carburetor enhancers and hydrogen generators.

Your list probably only covers half of what should be included.

Tony,
I just got started. Maybe we should start another thread with money wasting automotive gadgets and additives.

Just my 2 cents worth.
I've driven over 40,000 miles in a number of Chev 4's and well over 100,000 miles in my 34 Master and have never used an aditive in the oil. The only aditive I use is rust inhibitor in the radiator.
BTW I've just got home from the Qld (Aus) 45th anniversary rally, I drove my 34 approx 1400 miles and my son in law towed the 28 CSC, great run
