hi there, have a nos carter carbie and it will not idle. the stop does not touch the body so the disk inside is not fully closing. what should I do to make it slow down and idle ?? it idles so fast that I cannot engage gears once the engine is hot? it getting to the point of having to fit a modern carbie to get the engine to run because the old carter, even though NOS is rubbish, .....over 70 years old and a no goer

Did you take it apart and clean it/replace gaskets before you fitted and ran it?
If not that may be the issue, if its sat around for decades it may need a cleaning. I've used NOS distributors and other mechanical parts... many of which needed to be cleaned to get the decades old factory preservative off before they would function properly. Even if its never used, decades of dust and dirt can work its way into stuff and put the whammy on it.

Most likely the throttle plate is not centered. Back off the idle speed adjustment screw, loosen both screws holding the throttle plate to the shaft and then rotate the throttle shaft toward the closed position. You may have to tap on the throttle plate a little for it to move. Once the plate is centered in the throat then tighten the two screws. Screw in the idle adjustment screw until is just touches the stop and then one half to one revolution more. Once engine is running you can adjust the idle to your speed preference. That should fix your problem.
If it does not fix the problem come back with what happened or didn't happen and we can go from there.

It is common for rebuilders to fail to center the throttle plate. Not only effects the idle speed but also the coordination of throttle plate position with metering rod.
