I am trying to put the original steering wheel back onto my '41 Chevy Coupe. I need to run a new horn wire inside the column. There is only a small hole near the bottom of the column (under the hood). I have tried running a wire down the column in order to "pull" the horn wire through the column. Is there a trick to this? Help. Thanks,

It would be handy if the old wire was still in place so you could tie the end with some fishing line and pull though and then back...Might try a heavy piece of line and feed it back up from the hole in the column, then tie it to the wire and pull it back down...I know someday I may have this problem as my wire is starting to fray at the column hole...Lot's 'o luck...! Perhaps you should try and feed the wire from the column hole rather than the other way around...

What I did, turn that around. Run a solid wire 16-18 ga. wire UP the column. In through the small hole and out the top. Then hook your horn wire to it and pull it back down the column and out the small hole.

Thanks. But, there is a leather collar inside the column that prevents the wire from going past 2" from the top. Now, what??? Thanks,

The "collar" you speak of is the top bushing for the steering column. It also serves as another purpose. It is the contact ring for the horn prongs to make the final contact to "blow" the horn. The collar can be removed from the column and then you can "fish" a guide wire from the small hole at the end of the column up to the top. Now you feed the wire back down the column and out the small hole. You didn't mention if you were installing a "new" bushing or just repairing your unit.

The leather bushing is located about an inch inside the column. I am installing a new "ball bearing" bushing. I have the old bushing off. I can't get the leather bushing out. I am wondering if it isn't supposed to be there. Is there a picture of a Master Deluxe steering column? The 1941 shop manual has a Special Deluxe. I have the three armed wheel, with only the horn button. Now, I am concerned about just getting the wheel back on. The original wheel has been off for over 50 years. Somebody was rough getting the wheel off (before I got the car.) Thanks,

The leather bushing is not supposed to be there. The original looks just like the new one you have.
