My 12v-6v battery charger has quit on the 6v side. Can't believe there's any point in trying to fix it, but who knows. I have a 6v lead-acid rechargeable battery for an electric fence that comes with a small solid state recharger. The input is the usual 120v 60hz and the output is 6v dc 500mA. If I rerig the charger, will 500mA do anything for my group 1 car battery?

500 milliamps or 1/2 amp will be about a less than a trickle charger, probably won't do much for a six volt car battery.
I think that your charger is basically a transformer with two taps on the secondary one for 12 volts and the other for the 6 volts and part of the transformer is shot...or the part of the six volt circuitry from the transformer to the charging switch. If you are going to keep your 6 volt system just spring for a new 12v - 6v charger from Tractor supply or Harbor Freight. You will need it later anyway. Or get another 6 volt battey the same size as your car battery and charge them with a 12 volt charger with the two batteries in series. That is what I did with the 6 volt batteries on our golf cart (charged the six batteries two at a time in series) before I got a new 36 volt charger.
