Forum,
I'm trying to decide, which way to go on my "A-frame" knee action suspension.. Did I say that right? Sorry, don't know what they are called...

I am cleaning, repairing and painting the frame, making sure all bushings are replaced... When working on the front suspension, I decided to start inspecting the knees... Very rusty, dirty but solid underneath as I began cleaning..

my question is, should I keep going? Are the parts easy to replace? Or should I just replace the unit in whole?

how do I measure the size when going the new route?

any advice and recommendations welcomed and appreciated...

Maybe this is what you want. Rebuild Kit Kanter Auto Parts There shouldn't be any play in any of the linkage joints.

The arm forging them selves never gave trouble unless in a collision. The threaded connectios that have grease fittings should be replaced. That wold be the upper outer pivots, lower outer pivots and the lower inner cross shafts. Also replace the king pins. The king pin bushing are "full floating" which means they are free to turn in the spindle as well as the pin.
Are the shock absorbers leaking? Common to leak due to old age and being run with low fluid level.

Gene's answer is sound advice.

The only thing I would add it get new springs and new or rebuilt knee-action assemblies.

I think he means new or rebuilt shock absorbers. The complete front end assembly is refered to by Chevrolet (and GM) as knee-action.

I've never really felt that the Kanter kit was worth the money...You usually end up with parts you didn't really need...If you do get the kit and replace everything your going to be in for a surprise when it comes to re-alinement of the front end...Of course as far as you've gone already, your going to have to search high and low for someone that knows what their doing to get it correct now anyway...Good luck with the project...I don't mean to scare you..But, your in for the long haul...

Like old216 says you shouldn't find much, if any play in the linkage joints...That's one reason I wouldn't by the kit an pay for something I don't need...

is this a Chev or a Canadian Pontiac? The reason I ask is because 224 is the size of the Canadian Pontiac version of the 216.

I have all of the necessary parts for your suspension restoration for a 1939 Chevrolet. If you can cross reference any parts to the car you are working on we can strike a deal much lower than Kanter. My parts are NOS MOOG parts. I sold my cars a long time ago knowing that I wouldn't have time to restore them.
