I would like to replace both font shock absorbers on my 1940 Town Sedan. What is the most cost-effective (Cheap ! ) way to go ? I have two great cores . Is there a rebuilder that others have had good experiance with that they would reccomend? Is it better to buy new and scrap old? Chevs of the 40s has new for $375.00 each. Any better suppliers for new?

Thanks,

Chevy40 - I used Apple Hydraulics in NY for my '40 Special Deluxe Coupe and received good service. Cost was $558.00 and I received $200.00 credit when returning my used cores.

I just got my rebuilt shocks for my 1940 back from Apple Hydraulics- I would recommend them highly and thanks for the lead, Fred. I had one shock that was stuck and not rebuildable, so I paid an extra 100 for a core- I noticed when I took
the RH shock off it swung with no resistance and was dry. On a previous post of mine ChevNut guessed that the reason someone had put about 6 spacers and various pieces of wood in my coil springs was to tame down the effects of bad shocks. I know it comes as no surprise to members that he was right.

Should I paint shocks or leave bead blasted as they came to me?

Thanks chevy40

The original equipment shocks were painted black.
The genuine replacement shocks were painted black except the very outter 3 inches of the arm was not painted.
Paint the complete unit, just keep the paint thin on the area that contacts the cross member.
Usually the upper, outter pivot pins were worn out (where adjustment is made)...If they are loose and worn replace them while apart.
