Do any of you have a simple way or tool to compress the gear shift lever spring so that I can re-install it on the transmission?

Thanks to all!

I used a large socket and duct tape.

You could also use a short length of 2x4 with a hole drilled in it. You then slip it over the gear shift lever and press down on the 2x4 against the cap which will compress the spring.

Yeh, I agree. I used a piece of soft PINE wood to press-down the cap. It deforms just enough to "grip" the curved cap.

And I still have it. Keeping it for future use.

Yes, the pine board worked although it's harder to do with the tranny in the car beside the seat, hand brake, etc. Thanks for the help!

Hello all,When I read this posting I recalled removing the tranny cover and shifter, but,do not remember any problem re installing it--I do not remember any problem with any spring at all....I just set the cover back on then bolted it down as it was. My question therefore is,am I missing a spring in there or is it not always a problem to re install this part?? Thanks to all,Jay usa

They are discussing the procedure for removing the gear shift lever, cap and spring from the top of the transmission cover....not removing the transmission cover as a unit.
