Do any of you have a simple way or tool to compress the gear shift lever spring so that I can re-install it on the transmission?
Thanks to all! Happy Motoring!

You could also use a short length of 2x4 with a hole drilled in it. You then slip it over the gear shift lever and press down on the 2x4 against the cap which will compress the spring.

Yeh, I agree. I used a piece of soft PINE wood to press-down the cap. It deforms just enough to "grip" the curved cap. And I still have it. Keeping it for future use. --Bill B

Yes, the pine board worked although it's harder to do with the tranny in the car beside the seat, hand brake, etc. Thanks for the help!

Hello all,When I read this posting I recalled removing the tranny cover and shifter, but,do not remember any problem re installing it--I do not remember any problem with any spring at all....I just set the cover back on then bolted it down as it was. My question therefore is,am I missing a spring in there or is it not always a problem to re install this part?? Thanks to all,Jay
