Microsoft will pay you $100 to upgrade from XP.

Apparently they will also assist you with a free data transfer at any of their stores.

This offer ends June 15th.

No comments on how old your PC can be before this offer doesn't make sense.

or, that doesn't work, try this:

Yeah, but the catch is that you still need to buy a new PC. ;-)

BTW, I have Windows 8 running on my laptop, but when I bought it (at Best Buy), I asked them to have the interface look and work like XP. Evidently, Windows 8 comes with an 'XP shell' to preserve the previous look and feel.

Seems to work okay.

Cheers, Dean

I needed a new computer anyway...TigerDirect.com has great deals and it came with Windows 7 installed and a Windows 8 program, if you want to install it yourself...HP Professional 3515...It was just over $400 bucks...

I did the same thing but purchased it from a different vendor. My present unit is over 12 years old and has 250,000 miles on it. I also wanted Windows 7 and not 8.

At my age, maybe just running XP for another 4 or 5 years might be the best. I never called for support anyway. I just let the grand kids take care of any of my problems. Make sense? stressed

Support Stops on April 8th.

First Comment to think about-----
Quote
What exactly will end of Windows XP support do?
If you continue using Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work. It will, however, be vulnerable to security threats. It will also gradually become so obsolete that you just can't keep using the OS. "As more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimise for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP," Microsoft said.

Second comment to think about---
Quote
The result, even Microsoft has said, could be devastating. Last October, the company said that after April 8, Windows XP would face a future where machines are infected at a rate 66% higher than before patches stopped.

That's all I'm going to post... I just figured that this was a serious milestone that probably affects a lot of our Chat users. It needs to be considered in light of the increased "risk" that XP users will face in the coming months/years.

Comment: At least computer prices have continued to drop, so an upgrade is not as huge of an impact as it used to be.

By what I have been told early windows 8 was as bad as Vista was but the problems may have been fixed by now though.
I am sticking with XP for now, my windows 7 machine spat the dummy and dont work.

Old computers and modern software are like old cars and ethanol gas. You can't go far or fast before you have to fix something.

You are correct. However, old computers with old software cruises along nicely at a steady (but slow) speed. Especially if your computer is only used for email, eBay, typing letters and Chevy Chatter.

Tony

I happily had the windows XP HOME edition and loved it from 2001 till 2014 January. The computer puked out and they said don't fix it this new WINDOWS 7 is the cats [bleeped].........

I HATE WINDOWS 7 , windows XP was easy to operate, this stupid system , even the book windows for dummies cannot tell me how to lock in the type size and type. There is more stupid stuff on the header bars I will never need or want. Its a pain in the butt. I have since had the windows XP repaired and other than being much slower its a superior system in my humble opinion.

This new system has a QUAD CORE DRIVE and its lightning fast. wonder how it would work with XP.???

junk yard, you may want to look into having the hard drive replaced with the quad core hard drive, I couldn't believe the speed of this machine.

Ya, that would be cool but I can't do that since my computer runs on vacuum tubes. And, nothing will make a dial-up go any faster anyway. bigl

His memory may not be 100% accurate or the vacuum may not be in the tubes. I think it all may be solid state. Guess I will need to keep my security software up to date. Have too much software that doesn't seem to run with the "new" operating systems.
