Take some aluminum foil folded a few times, dip it in water and rub the area. There was a post on this process on May 21, 2013. I found it using the search feature by typing in "chrome" and parameters of older than 6 months and newer than one year. The search feature is not the best, but the post was by OUKAR and several have tried it and it really works well. It won't fill the pits but does get rid of the rust and does not harm the remaining chrome.

Another thing you might try is "Nevr-Dul". It is a wadding and comes in a small can. It is available here at Advanced Auto stores. No damage to existing chrome. 'Been using it for 25 years. Try it, you'll like it!
