VCCA Home Forums TECHNICAL - 1945 AND NEWER 1949-1954 Front fender to inner fender welting on my 50 Chev

Pulled the front fender off my 50 to do some repairs and noticed a fabric like material between the fender flange and the inner fender well. The material is in real bad condition. Looks like it might have been some sort of gasket to possibly seal the wheel opening. Does anyone re-pop the stuff? What have others done with this, remove and reassemble, fab up a replacement from a similar material? Maybe a bead of silicone during the reassembly All suggestions appreciated. Thanks

are you talking about the seal that goes on the curved part of the inner panel,say like just behind the firewall and barely seen when the door is open.

go to steele rubber site and look at their products for 50 chevy.that way you can see what it looks like and then go look for it locally or order from them its not very expensive and thet sell it by the foot

Although Steele products are "top of the line", so are their prices...Ouch

No, I'm referring to the gasket between the flange on the top of the the fender and the inner fender well. The gasket is horizontal from the front of the fender to the rear edge at the door The one you mention is vertical along the edge of the rear splash apron between the wheel well and the a-pillar. I'll look at Steele and see if they have anything. Thanks for the replies.

oh that one i made my own.went to my pal at his roofing company and got two types of roofing one was just like a thick rolled fiber roofing material the other was sort of the same type i think they used it like very edge of roof (i think its called ice guard)it was sticky on one side .i went with the sticky one cut it to the shape i needed then put the sticky side on the inner fender well that way it wouldnt move while i was putting the fender on by myself. that what i did cost me a six pack of bud lite andy

Yeah, when this topic didn't get any hits, I started thinking of what to use to make one. I like the Ice and water shield idea...Thanks for the replies.
