What is the correct method polarizing a 1948 regulator?? Is it BAT to GRD? My regulator tabs from L to R are BAT ARM FLD.

Past posts have described why we polarize a generator, or even the need to polarize them? For those trying this for the first time I want to caution you to what you should expect to see. I use a well insulated house wire (see picture) to touch the two above mentioned contacts on the regulator, B and G. The result is a 6 volt spark, depending on the charge in your battery, it could be more or less. When you see the spark the deed is done, the generator is polarized. If a 6 volt spark might surprise or cause you to jump back then you will realize the importance of the wire I chose and the position of your hands and elbows during your first attempt. The faint of heart might choose to use an old football helmet on their head, elbow pads, and welding gloves??? Good luck, Mike ![[Linked Image from i1321.photobucket.com]](http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/41chevymike/IMG_0459_zps10a12084.jpg)

Just to clarify, "G" means "GEN" or "Generator" (which is the same as "ARM"). The "G" does not mean "Ground". I have to admit that did confuse me ! The "ARM" is "grounded"...? Although I rarely "polorize" after disconnecting wires, the ampmeter pointing towards discharge would prompt me to do so...

The "ARM" is "grounded"...? "ARM" and "GEN" are the same thing on a regulator and the jumper wire does not go to ground.

I finally got mine charging after replacing voltage regulator and a factory rebuilt generator, had to play adjust the spring on one of the contacts on the regulator, so the generator I took off was proly still good oh well, you can never have too many spares....

How important is it to use the original regultor? In other words if an original is no good or unavailable can one from another model or make be used assuming that is the same voltage as the generator.
