So, that's what they used in the "well" mounted tire...?

My 48 Fleetmaster coupe, lays flat in the left front corner with a retainer that bolts to the floor with 1 bolt the size of the wheel nuts. No well.

That's the way mine is situated ( laying flat )...I was surprised to find that to remove the spare tire is the only time I need to lower the center ( accessory ) bumper guard...I was under the impression I would have to lower it to open the trunk lid, too. I was wrong...

Do you need to lower the bumper guard or just so you can slide the tire straight out?

That's the "deal"...If you have the "shelf" above the spare tire, then you can't lift it over the center guard to remove the tire without lowering the guard...

Note: The center guard is one of the last "accessories" I bought that my car didn't have...Added it the day it came from eBay...I really like the looks of it...Really adds to the "look" on the back of the car...

aaha. My 48 doesn't have the shelf. It has a piece of plywood that snaps into the wheel. It is covered with a fabric. Looks like it is original.

Mine is original I believe, it's a angle iron stand with a plywood top, painted black with a 2" hole where you can check and fill the spare...

Keith/Kevin -

You are both correct. The '47 still had the stand with the tire mounted underneath it. The '48 coupes and convertibles do not have the stand. Instead they have that round plywood piece covered with a fabric that snaps into the tire rim. It also has the hole for checking the tire pressure. A much simpler design and I suppose it saved money for Chevrolet. And as you note, it does make getting the spare out a whole lot easier!
