I'm gathering info on rebuilding my transmission for my '47 Fleetline. First off is there a manual that covers the rebuild specifically? Also I'm looking for parts suppliers that I may need to contact once I get started?
Thanks!

I believe that the information on rebuilding your transmission is in the 1947 shop manual.

I have been accumulating parts to rebuild one of my transmissions for over a year. I have 3 extra transmissions for parts. I posted the parts I was looking for in the "Parts Wanted" area of Chevy Chat. I got a few that way but also got parts off of ebay and from part suppliers like Chevs of the 40's and the Filling Station. Chevs of the 40's has a real good diagram listing all the parts with their correct names which is very helpful. You will probably find that it is hard to accumulate the new parts you think you need. Unfortunately, you will not know what needs replacing until you disassemble your transmission.

A couple of guys have rebuilt their transmissions within the last year so you should read through their old posts to get a feel for the process. Do an Advanced Search under the term "transmission" and you should find a lot of info. Your 47 manual is likewise as Junkyard Dog advises a must to read and understand.

You may want to consider having a company rebuild yours. Chevs of the 40's advertises a service for $500.00 plus parts.

I have a couple of hours of video I can put on DVD of my disassembling 2 transmissions. It is not edited so lacks polish and must be watched all the way through to understand. Not knowing a thing about transmissions I didn't learn the best practices without a lot of trial and error. Someday, I will edit the thing so it makes more sense. If after reading old posts, and seeing others opinions, if you are still serious about doing the work yourself let me know and I will make you up a DVD.

Now that I think about things more I have seen a DVD advertised for sale on rebuilding Chevy transmissions, differentials, and rear axles from 1931-42 on Ebay. It costs $23.95. Perhaps someone knows about it??? Your 47 transmission is the same as my 41. So the DVD should be okay for your year.

Good luck, Mike

P.S. I'll add some more info if you have questions or as I think about your post. Transmission problems seem to be a popular discussion topic coming up about every 3 or 4 months. So welcome to the club

Thanks for all your help guys.

Maybe it's better to get a spare transmission and rebuild that trans and then swap the two when its ready?

Who does Chevsof40's send the transmissions to?

What year are these transmissions the same? (Will a 51 trans be the same?)

What is the name of these transmissions?
