Turn the gear in the steering box around 180 degrees in circumference and then reinstall. See if that will improve the mesh with the worm gear.

Hello Switzerland,
If the 1930 steering box is the same as the 1931 steering box, you might visit Bill's ( 31chevrolet.com) web site for description and adjustment information. You can find it within the section labeled RESTORATION- Steering column and more.. I have read that reindexing (rotating) the worm 180 degrees will introduce unworn surfaces and provide a second life to the steering gear, just as Junkyard stated. I'm unable to find any steering box conversion/replacement information for the 1930 steering box. Other years of Chevrolet/GM vehicles might work without modification, but I don't know. A replacement of a different steering box from other manufactures might require modifications to mounting, shaft and pitman connections and be considered experimental in my opinion. Good Luck.

I think the 1930 steering box is this type.

The 1931 - 1932 steering box are not the same as 1925 - 1930

The 1930 steering box is totally different than the steering box used in 1931.

The worm is not rotated 180 degrees. The gear that the worm meshes with is rotated 180 degrees.

1931 and 1932 steering boxes will fit straight in to a 1929 or 1930 and they have more adjustments and a slightly higher steering ratio that makes the steering easier.

I did the same modifikation like the member blue zone
i make some bearings out of center it works better but not the way that i like it.
I am a mechanik an i know how mutch play ist ok for a old steeringbox but it is fo me to mutch....smile.
Maby i make a new worm with the turning machine but it is a lot of work to make a good worm.
To find parts for a 1931 steering box is mutch more easyer as a 1930

Hello Junkyard and Switzerland,
Thanks again Junkyard for setting me straight about the gear and not the worm. I wasn't sure if the 31 would interchange with the 30, that's why I used the (IF) word. As Switzerland is a mechanic, it appears that another type of steering box could be made to work for the 30 Chev. I hope that Switzerland will tell us how the repair gets resolved.

Hello Switzerland,
Good to hear that you were able to repair your 1930 steering box and not have to retrofit some other steering box. I would like to see and read about what you did. I'm not qualified (don't know how) to post photos, so I'm not much help. If someone with the knowledge can contact Stephan, maybe his procedure and photos will get posted. Thanks
