Does anyone know if 39 Chev Master 85's came with a four speed transmission? This is an ex U.S. Government car.

No passenger cars in the '30's came with a 4 speed. In 1939 the truck 4 speed was a large non-syncromesh unit and it used a different bell housing than a car.Doubt if it would even have fit under the floor. It used a lock-out latch lever next to the shift knob for getting into reverse.
The 1939 passenger cars came with a 3 speed with a floor shift lever, the column mounted vacuum assisted shift was optional.
