I need advice on replacing my valves, when I search for valves the ones that everyone is offering are late model valves. My question is this; the valves that they are offering are longer that what is called for, how are they converting the valve to the shorter shaft that is needed?

jerrychev; About 4 years ago I had a valve job done on my 1925. The machine shop installed valves for an early 1960's Oldsmobile 330ci engine that were the same size but had a slightly thicker stem. The valve guides had to be done, so he installed the newer valves and modern valve keepers. The valves were only about $8 each. Hope this helps?

Thanks for the advice, but I was lucky and found a local Auto/Speed shop that has new ones, both for the early 27 engines and mine a late 27 engine the same ones go in a 28. Perfect matches and $16.00 each. What was funny was this place must have everything in stock, on the wall was a complete gasket set for these early Chevy's.

More problems; The head is done, the and everything is hooked up. When I filling the radiator up I noticed water pouring out the exhaust manifold @#!$. I pull the head and found a hole in the head water jacket. I either need a new head or a California machine shop that can repair my head. Any info would be great.

Hi,
Bummer! I had a crack in the water jacket of my '28 head. I ground out the edges with a dremel, cleaned the crack really good with acetone, and used JB Weld to fill it. This action reduced the leak significantly.
I followed up with Bar's Leak (aluminum dust suspended in liquid) and the leak has diminished down to a few drops each time I take my truck out for a run.
Hope this helps! Dean

Here's a recommendation for a shop in the SF Bay Area (northern California) from George Childs (Leaping Lena): ----------------------------------------------- This is the place I had do the head work for my '33 Chevy:
Al Hubbard Machine Shop 21030 Meekland Ave Hayward, CA 94541 (510) 537-1885 Machine Shop
Good work; interested in Model "T" F_ _ _s and speed equipment. But willing to work on old Chevys. ---------------------------------
Cheers, Dean

Thanks, I found a place in my area that only works on heads and engine blocks. It appears they can fix any head or block, they knew exactly what mine was when I walked in. The guy said oh you have a Chevy 4 cylinder and asked if it was the late 1927 head with the 1.656 valves or early with 1.5 valves. I have the late 1927 head. So for $120.00 they are going to weld the water jacked inside the head the correct way. They heat the head and then weld it. when done welding the slow cool the head so that the cast iron and weld become one.

I am located in So. California, the shop is located in the City of Azusa. (Just a side note the City name Azusa is not a real word it stands for Everything from A to Z in the USA.)
