Yes, I used this powder coat material several months ago. Bill Barker and his supplier sold me enough to have all six of my '31 Special Sedan wheels done. They are just beautiful. I'm very pleased.

The real trick to powder coating wire wheels is getting all the hidden oil, grease and dirt removed. I thought they were pretty clean when I took them to the coater. He had to bake the wheels, de-grease them and repeat it two or three times to get them clean.

Happy Motoring,
Bill Knapp

That's good to know about the 100% degreasing/oil on the wheels and making sure they are super clean

It took about 4 1/2- 5 lbs. Part of the problem the coater has is there has to be enough powder in the canister he is using to get good vacuum to coat it all evenly. The equipment all varies. There is some waste. The junctions of the wires at the hub and rim are very challenging for a coater as there are some sharp edges that require 'extra' care and extra powder or they don't come out looking good.

I know that Steve (at the Filling Station) has honestly tried to figure out exactly what amount of powder was needed for most jobs. He didn't want folks to have to buy more than they needed, nor, to run out. He is aware that there is usually a "mandatory" amount of wastage depending upon what equipment the coater is using.
stressed

When Steve visited my house a couple of months ago, I showed him what types of packaging containers I used. I've bought powder from many different suppliers -- even Harbor Freight!!? (I have the Eastwood home powder coating system that I've used for the past 10 years on SMALL parts. - Note it's too small to use on rims.) willy

So, be aware that the bulk sizes sold now are an "educated" guess as to what is needed for 6 rims. If you end up with some left over, you might want to double-bag it and pass it on to another member who needs a tad more. Or not. rolllaugh

Either way, your feedback to TFS would probably be appreciated. They really seem to try to meet our needs.

Good luck!!

PS. Did you see that they also offer the Cream Medium PAINT for striping!?!?!? WOW.

Dang, with things this easy... maybe it's time to restore another '31!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a sample piece available with the cream medium on it? I would like to compare it with my wheels.

I have some samples that I made about 3 years ago when I was restoring my Landau -- after I had figured out the correct color. I offered them here on Chat to members and had a couple of "takers"...

I think that I have a couple of them left. Send me a PM with your address (so I don't have to look you up) ha!! and I'll send you one in the mail -- as long as the US Post Office still honors my 19 cent stamps! :-)

If I have any left, then I'll bring them to the Board Meeting in St. Louis next month. Reserve yours now. ha ha..

PS. We'll have to ask TFS whether they are going to have any samples. Maybe a better question would be -- "How much would you be willing to spend for them?" Hummm... glad I'm not in that business.

Thanks Bill and Steve for all the time and work you put into this powder coat. I hope every one realizes this does not happen over night. A big thanks again, Roger

Steve from The Filling Station here. As Bill B. mentioned, we are interested in feedback on this item specifically as to the quantity required for six wheels. We have had two people that confirmed that three pounds would do six wheels. Apparently Bill K. had a different requirement. More information is needed to be sure. We will continue to sell the powder coat in 3# packages until we confirm that more is needed. This will be a trial and error mission but we will get it right eventually. :)
