This is a NOS(?) steering wheel that I am trying to determine if it is a Chevrolet or other GM product and what year it would have been used. The guy owning it thinks it was from a late 30's car, but is uncertain. Any ideas?

Yes, it looks just like a 1939 car steering wheel EXCEPT the 1938 and up used splines and not a woodruf key.
Seems like this wheel has been questioned before.

Yes, Gene we exchanged emails on this a few(?) years ago. The owner recently asked me again to see if I could help him find out what this wheel would have been used on.

As back then, I'd bet you are right Gene. Your info would also seem to eliminate a '50's application as well.

Does anyone know then, what this steering wheel was used on?

Did GM use the woodruff keys on other models in their product line later than 1938?

Did GM have these plastic-looking wheels in earlier years? I say plastic-looking, because it looks completely different, than painted brownish/black bake-lite. The color is more like a weak chocolate milk and in the few spots where nicked/dented appears to be that color to the core. The nicked/dented spots show damage indicative of a more modern plastic.

The wheel is said to have been in with a bunch of parts bought years ago from a closing Chevrolet dealership. It was one of a half dozen or so that were wrapped in packing material that was thought to be consistent with the wheels age????

The presence of both a spline and a woodruf keyway may suggest this was a "universal" steering wheel intended for several applications? Would there be any other reason to have both features? Does this suggest it may be a later replacement by GM or others?

All of the Chevrolet parts books have the 1937 and prior cut-off.....and the only plastic to the core Chevrolet steering wheels were the accessory type and that isn't one of them.
