I want to restore my banjo steering wheel and am trying to determine the color of the plastic rim. The plastic on mine is completely gone. Does anyone have a picture of an original or can you direct me to a source to look at?

The 37 Banjo and related accessories are a really interesting "marble"-like bakelite material and are virtually impossible to recreate. It is a commination of a taupe/brown base color with spots of black, white, grey, etc. The steering wheel vendor referred to above does really nice work, but the 37 Banjo's I've seen them restore do not look too much like the originals. I am in the same boat, I have a 37 Banjo that was epoxied and repaired beautifully, but needs to be painted. I am working with a local woodgrain artist to see if he can recreate the original marble effect using a gearshift knob as a reference. The optional gearshift knob or parking brake extension have the same finish, try to find one of these first and use that as a guide. Hope this helps!

Quality Restorations Inc. San Diego, CA. Dennis Cooks. He will recast your steering wheel and duplicate the marbled appearance. He just completed a 1939 Deluxe steering wheel for my car and did a great job. www.qualityrestorations.com

Just got off the phone with Dennis, he sounds fantastic! His process sounds very impressive and is probably the only way to go to get a concours correct wheel. It is about $600 for a basic re-cast and new center cap in a solid color, $800 for the marbled appearance (this does not include rechroming the spokes, etc,).
I wouldn't call him unless you want to spend the bucks, but a very nice, informative guy.
