I am rebuilding my generator and picked up NOS coils off ebay. The picture on ebay had the coils in front of the old shipping container that showed part no. 1902105, which according to one of the on-line parts manuals is right on, so I bought with some comfort. When it got here, the part no. stamped on the coil itself is 1908205, which I can't find anywhere. I know I got taken in a classic bait and switch, but my question is whether this part will nonetheless work in my generator (which itself is 948-R)? Thanks for any insight, if I have to do an install and check, but I would rather check with the experts first.

Eli, why not go back to the seller (nicely) and see if he may have grabbed and shipped the wrong coils. Give him a chance to make it right. If he doesn't make it right, my feedback would be blistering!

Just a suggestion - - -

Are you sure that the number on the coils are the the part number? I have had that problem on other parts.

Gaither, good suggestion if these are the wrong coils, but if they are going to work, I am happy with my purchase. PU, good point, and no I can't say for certain. The number pattern is right, I just assumed, but what else could it be? I will say that eyeballing, it looks like the right part, but that's not much of a test.

Check out this current Ebay auction item 161197032737. It appears to have the 1902105 number on the box and the 1908205 number on the coils.

Eli,
The description which follows the part number 1902105, in the catalog, states 1 RH and 1 LH. So it appears the coils should not be alike. There would have been a manufacturing number for each of them which could not match the part number for the two of them packaged together. You are probably OK. I might have some NOS ones at home. If so, I could check the number situation there and get back to you.

Mike, if you wouldn't mind checking, that would be great. Like the coils Richard pointed out, this has both R and L, but each is stamped with 1908205, so I don't think that's it.

MR59, I think I came out strong on calling this a bait and switch; that's my fear, not my opinion. I am hoping that, as Richard pointed out, I got exactly what I wanted. Hopefully Mike can confirm. Thanks to all.

The shipping container number you mention may actually be the Package number, or assembly number. The coil, bracket, and other parts in the package each have a part number.

Here is an example:

Eli,
I looked at my stock and did not find anything to solve the mystery.
Do your two coils look alike or do they appear to be a RH and LH?
I'm still inclined to think you are OK.

They certainly appear the same. I am likewise inclined. Greg is probably right, the two parts numbered 1908205, when properly soldered together, form part number 1902105. I am going to proceed. Thanks everyone for the input.

The 948R calls for a (right) 1854538 and a (left) 1859914 coil which was later superseded to set # 1902105. I don't see the 1908205 number in any of my catalogs. For anyone else interested, I have these coils in stock both in NOS and modern new coils. I also carry any other parts needed for this generator as well as most other starters and generators.
