I recently bought a new water pump for my 40 town sedan from Chevs of the 40s. I noticed when I had it laid flat and turned the pulley there was a 3/16" "wobble" at the pulley lip. This was also true on the face of the pulley, though to a lesser degree. I ordered a new one and when it came today, I found it had the same wobble. Am I expecting too much from a rebuilt water pump? Was or is this common? I'll wait for your opinions before I decide to return ( again ! ) or install. Thanks!

When you say 3/16" wobble at the pulley lip I guess you mean the edge of the area the fan belt runs in, if I am correct this is not good. The fan belt area should run straight and centre otherwise the fan will end up at least part way through your radiator at some stage. Tony

Agreed. The pully needs to run straight & true. It's time to have a talk with Chevs about their water pumps. I purchased a rebuilt water pump for my 38 Master at a local auto parts store. It was $70 & no shipping. There are still a lot of farm trucks using that family of engines so they are available.

I recently purchased a rebuilt water pump from NAPA locally, had to wait overnight for it but it cost just under $30.00 and has been on the car now for a year with no problems.

Thanks to all for the input. I just boxed up both pumps to send back for credit. I knew the wobble did not seem right, but thought this forums knowledge would be helpful. Right again!! Chevy40 P S The wobble was really closer to 7/32"

Help!! I had no trouble getting my refund from Chevs of the 40s for the two wobbling waterpumps, but I have spent the last week calling every auto parts business listed in the Bloomington Illinois yellow pages and everyone tells me they can not get the pump for my 1940 Town Sedan. Chevs of the 40s is the only supply house I have dealt with, but I know others are out there. Can someone post a phone # for a supplier that they have had good luck with that might have a water pump for my car? Thanks in advance!!!!

I got mine at the local Bumper To Bumper parts house. I bought a NOS pump on eBay about a month ago. Kanter has them for $95, Obsolete Chevy Parts has them for about $120, The Filling Station has a rebuild service for $95.

Just hope that its not the same brand as Chevs of the 40's sell.I doubt if there are too many different companys making them.
I always watch for a GENUINE CHEVROLET to appear on Ebay.....and keep it for a spare.I believe that I paid $35 for the last one (for a 1939-40).
