I have gutted the shut off and installed a diode in the old shut off housing on the generator, when it idles I get 0 to 3 amps, driving 10 to 15 depending on how the gauge needle shakes (new gauge) is that too much, if I drive with the head lights on I get about 5 amps. Is this okay or is there a special diode that will have lower amps when driving?

What year is your car?????? The generator output determines the amps. Sounds like everything is working fine so don't try to fix it if it ain't broke. Enjoy your ride.

Your generator is adjusted too high if you want the generator and battery to last and you don't routinely drive with the lights on. It is far better to adjust the third brush so you have zero or maybe a little negative amperage with the lights on. That will keep from over charging the battery and reducing the life. At 15 amps you risk overheating the generator. I set mine for approx 8 amps.

I had the generator rebuilt and have the brush set as low as it will go for out put, do you recommend a particular diode that will limit the out put.

hi chaps, this is a very interesting subject. as what we are looking at is the value of the diode. Shaw the amp value of the generator does not want to exceed 15amp max.So if we know what our max output currant from the generator is we can determine the currant range of the diode. So what we must look for now is voltage range of the diode. Don't be silly and go for higher voltage than you need because the diode will stop conducting with less than .5 of a volt potential accross it.So you will never end up with a fully charge battery unless you go to a full voltage regulator.Which I think i have seen from time to time that will fit in the Delco Remy Generator. But I shall just keep on plodding along with my voltage cut out my 28 national cheers John Dix
