Hello to all. I am disassembling the steering assembly on my '31 Coach. No real problems but I am uncertain how to remove the bearings and worm gear from the cast steering box. I would like to replace the bearings since I have it all apart. I have removed the collar that goes around the steering shaft and threads into the cast box. I can now see a recessed ball bearing that must be removed but can't see any way to pull it. My best idea so far is to chuck the steering shaft into my vice and tap the steering box away from it and hopefully the bearing and worm gear would slide out. Thought I'd ask this group's opinion first however. Any ideas? As always, thanks for the help!

Hi Tom,

Take a look here at Bill Barker's 1931 Chevrolet site:

Clean and inspect your bearing outer race. If there are no signs of spauling (nicks or groves).then there is no need to replace them. The bearing is a cup and cone style and will need to be adjusted for the internal clearnce on re assembly.
