I wouldn't think so. You may want to touch up the pump and block where you may have messed up the looks of it. Nothing more, I wouldn't think.

If the rusted area is where the gasket is installed, you should clean and smooth the area before applying the gasket.

I use, Form -A Gasket sealant non Harding( flexible ) 2B. Just make sure
the surface is nice and clean. I use a thin coat on each side and never had a leak. Good Luck !

I'd look at the gasket that came with the pump and make sure it is a good quality gasket that is made out of good material. I have bought many pumps that come with a thin cheap paper gasket. Using a cheap paper gasket with sealer is going to leak sooner than later. I use Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac with a good quality gasket and have no leaks.

Don,you are correct about the gaskets supplied with the water pump, thin and mine was ripped as well,I have no intent of useing it..I have some Indian Head sealant,it certainly bonds tightly, but is quite thin,I think I need a bit more build up to assure I have filled all the little rust pits

CC,

Get you some thicker gasket material and a small ball peen hammer. Make you own gasket. Easy to do.

Trim the edges a bit so it doesn't look like an amatour job. I would use Indian Head on hoses but I would use a light coating of permatex for the water pump gasket.

Indian Head gets pretty hard. Good for hoses because it will seal good but break loose when removing them. You won't go wrong with either IH or Permatex.

Best,

I never thought about useing sealant on the hoses, maybe the trick,I have to re-tighten the clamps a while after re-installing and even with out sealant they are a bear to bust loose...I will try it,thanks

Hey Bruce and other VCCA folks,

Here is a good article on what gasket to use for various applications:
