Does anyone know about or has installed the wire mesh in the roof?
Any info would be appreciated.

As stated in te 1934 Fisher Body Manual; "The aerial for the radio in the 1933 and 1934 closed bodiess is a woven metal netting, or screen, covering from seven to ten square feet of space in the roof frame. The screen is sewn to a slightly larger piece of jute cloth which in turn is tacked to the roof slats and bows before the roof padding and cover is installed. The lead-in wire is soldered to the left corner of this wire screen and follows down to the left body metal pillar cover.""

Thanks so much for the info. Would aluminum screen work, or a copper mesh of some kind. I suspect any material that is flexible and provides the plane would work. Obtaining original material may be remote, but would sure like to see or hear the actual appearance.

I have a 35 Buick that I installed a regular universal antenna between the roof bows from side to side. It works good and is hidden between the roof cover and the headliner. This is not original but works. Chuick

Excellent idea. The roof top antenna was installed at the factory for some cars, the 1933 is an example.

Wes, My '35 Standard coupe had the mesh in the roof. It is pretty much just a piece of galvanized hardware cloth that you can buy at Ace or True Value hardware stores. They should have it on a roll and sell it by the running foot.

How cool is the fact that they thought to use a wire mesh in the roof as a radio ( high tech) antenna! I don't think radio's were portable long before 1935.

If you can locate some copper mesh, it would be the best choice. Y&Z can make you the lead-in wire. You can modify the receptacle for the antenna on the radio to the male type used by the modern antenna male plug.
