I just installed an 8 volt Battery in my 41 coupe, it did what i wanted brighter lights,starts when engine is hot, the problem is the voltage regulator chatters, it has an adjustment knob that know one around here has seen, On my test outing the battery tested at 9.3 volts and the amp meter in the car discharged all the time, at the end it read 8.3 volts at the battery, Has anyone tried this or have a solution? Putting an 8-volt battery on a six-volt system is not recommended by most old car dudes because of the problems the 8-volt battery creates. I have only known one fellow that did install an 8-volt battery (he has a 1937 coupe) and he removed it shortly thereafter because of all of the problems the 8-volt battery created. If you have a six-volt system that is up to snuff with good wiring, the correct size positive battery cable, a quality rebuilt starter with the correct field coils, and a high CCA battery, six-volts will work just fine.

My sentiments exactly. Have never seen a valid reason to install an 8-volt battery. The money wasted on the 8-volt would probably be much better used for a "tune-up" on the original system. You might do a search and find our opinions are shared. 8-VOLT BATTERY @#$%& DON'T GO THERE.

My 1940 had an 8 volt battery in it when I got it, I removed and replaced with a 6 volt, had to do a complete connection check, including spark plug wire replacement and the coil wire replacment from the ignition, it now starts great even when it's hot. I love it.............

The lights will be bright with a 6 volt and good grounds + the bulbs will last longer.

I don't mean to sorta jump on the bandwagon against 8 volt batteries, so all I'll "say" is the guys who posted ahead of me are pretty much considered to know what they're talking about.
From the experience side, I can say I've only ever used 6 volt batts in my 6 volt Chevys. Never had any trouble, as long as the system was up to snuff. Two big issues: a PG starter in a PG car (such as a '54) and for sure having 6 volt cables.

Thanks for all the reply's, It looks like I'll have to go back to 6 volt, even though I have replaced all cables starter ,gen and etc. MY 41

My 42 sedan used to be hard to start battery was always weak UNTIL I put on 0000 battery cables on both the pos and neg and also replaced the voltage regualator those def solved my problems, I highly recommend the big cables
