Are patch panels/sheetmetal panels for a 51 chevy car the same as a 51 chevy convertible? Chevsofthe40's has a lot replacement panels for 51 but doesn't specify too much about a convertible.

I'm looking to purchase a '51 convertible, so I'm looking into compatibility with other years/models/non-convertibles parts in general

What "body panels" are you referring to? I recently restored a '52 convertible, using a BelAir as a donor car and found that other than the convertible top well and a small area surrounding it, the bodies were identical from the cowl to the rear bumper. I have a few original parts left over so if you want to send me a PM I'll see if I can help. Most of the replacement panels are pretty good but not always an easy fit.

The patch panels for the floor are not exact reproductions anyway, and come in sections that need to be welded to fit. All of the fenders, inner fenders and rockers etc, would be the same. The doors are only interchangeable with the hard top.

The lid fits coupe, convertible and Bel Air....1949-1952 would be the same except for trim holes on the 1949 and 1950.

I used EMS panels on a 51 hardtop from the door back .
Fit pretty good except for the wheel opening ! Had to rework for skirts to fit ! Panels are a good gauge >

Thanks for the info guys! This 51 convertible is going to be a lot work, a lot of metal work/replacement. Thanks again for the tips of where I can get started.

To "gpallen2". I just read you recently restored a '52 Conv. Would you happen to have a book to show where the trim pieces go? My friend has a trailer-full of trim for different cars & we can't identify what to hold out for the '52. Would greatly appreciate it, can't find manuals anywhere for that year.

I'm not familiar with any manual or trim document that illustrates the trim in any definitive way. The '51 vs '52 trim differences are minor; front fender stainless trim and additional trim on the rear fender for the '52. I was lucky that the BelAir was pretty complete with respect to trim. I bought a number of NOS trim pieces on eBay plus I had a local guy that repaired/polished stainless parts. A lot of people say they do stainless but there are only a few that do it really well. Talk to local club members or rodders to narrow down the field.
Fasteners to attach the trim to the body are the biggest challenge. If you're lucky, there will be some fasteners in the old trim to identify.
Let me know if you run into specific problems.
One unique problem with the convertible and BelAir bodies is the "drain pan" for the rear windows. If your quarter panels are rusted out just behind the door jams, you can expect to find these pans rusted through. They are a real "bear" to repair since there is no access to them. If you have this problem, PM me and I'll try to help you out.
