I believe the mounting flange is smaller. My 51 had a 235 carb on the 216 engine, but the manifolds were changed to facilitate the swap. Also it's possible that the 216 carb will not supply the correct amount of fuel required by the 235, unless perhaps the carb has been modified from original specs.

Going the wrong way.
To put it in more modern terms, would you put the carb from a 283 on a 350 and expect it to work. Run yes.. but sure would be choked down.

I put a pair of 235 carbs on a 37 Chevy 216 in High School in 1970 with a antique even then Edmunds intake. Ran great!

The flange on a 216 carb is smaller than the 235.

I have seen carbs for a 216 with modified oblong mounting holes. I think they were used on 235s.

I would not suggest using a 216 carb. on a 235 engine.
It will provide a leaner mixture that could cause the exhaust valves to fail. Also there will be a power loss due to the smaller throat and venturi.

Different opinions here, but from personal experience, on my 48 Fleetmaster with a 1962 235 eng in it, the intake, exhaust, carb and all were from a 216 eng. I did not use the intake port rings because of the difference in diameter on the intakes between the 216 and 235 engines. As far as running, owned the car 6 years and had no problems. Started great, ran perfect, never did run lean according to plug color or tail pipe color. Gas mileage was between 15 and 18 mpg running steady 50 mph.

Just my humble opinion here.

You can get the port rings with the different size ends to match the 216 to the 235 heads.

Jim.
